Return from Exile: Contemporary Southeastern Indian Art, the first major traveling exhibition of contemporary art by Southeastern Native American artists opens at the Cherokee Heritage Center in Park Hill, Oklahoma on May 12, 2017.  RFE showcases more than fifty pieces by over thirty artists in all media.  Co-sponsored by the Institute of Native American Studies at the University of Georgia and the Southeastern Indian Artists Association, the exhibition is curated by Bobby Martin, Tony Tiger, and INAS Director Jace Weaver.

The Cherokee Heritage Center, also known as the Cherokee National Museum, is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Cherokee culture and history.  In addition to curators Martin and Tiger, among the nationally and internationally acclaimed artists whose work is included in the show are Roy Boney, Toneh Chuleewah, Joseph Erb, Shan Goshan, Starr Hardridge, Benjamin Harjo, Troy Jackson, and Richard Ray Whitman.  The exhibition will run through August 11 at the CHC.

RFE first premiered at the Lyndon House Art Center, the Athens Georgia municipal museum and gallery on August 22, 2015.  Since then it has carried the names of UGA and INAS across the country to multiple venues in Arkansas, Florida, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.  Opening symposia, featuring both featured artists and scholars of Native American art, have been held at each museum.

Follow its showing at the CHC, RFE will next travel to the Fine Art Museum of the John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina.  It will run there from August 21 to December 15, 2017.
