Tuesday, October 28 2025, 5:30 - 7pm Lamar Dodd School of Art | S150 Guest speaker The Lamar Dodd School of Art welcomes Boston-based photographer Oscar Palacio as inaugural artist in residence for a two-week visit to the school. Through this residency, Palacio aims to extend his exploration of place and environment into the vibrant cultural fabric of Athens, GA, using the Oconee River as a lens to examine the interplay between the natural and the built environment. All are invited to hear from Palacio on his practice during this free public lecture titled “Navigating Place.” Oscar is consulting with INAS faculty members Claudio Saunt and James Owen about Native American History, UGA History, and important water-related sites around campus and Athens during his visit. About the artist Oscar Palacio is a Colombian-born, Boston-based photographer whose work explores the intricate relationships between landscape, memory, and history in the American context. His work underscores the idea that history is not only shaped by events, but by how those events are remembered, represented, and physically inscribed into the land. Palacio has a background in architecture from the University of Miami and an MFA in Photography from the Massachusetts College of Art + Design. His photographs are held in the permanent collections of the Harvard Art Museums, MIT, Yale University Art Gallery, and the Addison Gallery of American Art, among others. Recent exhibitions include American History Revisited at Harvard University Center for American Political Studies in Cambridge, MA, Walden, revisited at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, MA, Devour the Land at the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, MA, and Contemplating the View: American Landscape Photographs at the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, MA.
