Undergraduate Certificate

Requirements

The undergraduate certificate requires 19 hours of course work. It is designed to provide students with a broad foundation in Native American Studies. This includes:

a) RELI/NAMS 1100 Introduction to Native American Studies (In some rare instances, a directed study, approved by the Director of INAS, may be substituted for this requirement);

b) at least one course or directed study in each of five core areas (cultures; archaeology; History; law and policy; and literature); and

c) completion of RELI/NAMS 4701 Methods in the Study of Native American Cultures.

Below is a list of current courses that fulfill the core distribution requirement. Not every one of these courses is offered every year. In addition, classes are added every semester. Students should contact Dr. LeAnne Howe for academic advising and to complete the paperwork to enroll in the program.

Because no specific relevant undergraduate-level courses are currently offered in Law and Policy, students are instructed to consult with the Director about an appropriate directed reading or other opportunities.

Courses may be listed in more than one of the five core distribution areas, but each course can only be used to fulfill the requirement in one category. Consult with the Director for details.
