Chumash Heritage

The Chumash are an ocean-going band of California natives who live in one of the most culturally and biologically diverse regions of coastal North America. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is moving forward with the process of designating the area as a marine sanctuary. The region's diverse species, including the western snowy plover and the southern sea otter, will be protected along with Chinook salmon and leatherback sea turtles. See the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation for more details.
