Image: Moccasins that were taken from an unknown Native boy at the notorious Carlisle Indian Industrial School more than 100 years ago, have finally been returned to Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate lands. They were repatriated to the tribe along with the remains of two students who died at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in the late 1800s. Tamara St. John, a Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate historian and South Dakota state representative said, “It's all about those moccasins, they are the symbol of everything that happened there.” The return of the moccasins represent a step towards reconciliation and healing.
