Bolivian Indigenous groups assert claim to treasure of ‘holy grail of shipwrecks’

Indigenous groups in Bolivia have asked to halt Colombia's plan to recover expensive remains from a shipwreck. The 18th-century galleon is believed to be carrying gold, silver, and emeralds worth billions. The Caranga, Chicha, and Killaka peoples in Bolivia believe this wealth should be considered "common and shared patrimony" as it is likely the gold was mined by indigenous people forced into labor.

Colombia’s plans to lift the remains without consulting their descendants would violate international law. Spain and Unesco have been notified of the communities's request to halt the project.
