New Course: Exploring Indigeneity through Case Studies and Political Debates

HIST 4000/6000: Exploring Indigeneity through Case Studies and Political Debates

Is “The Indigenous” a natural category, a matter of blood, specific to language, a product of culture, historically contingent, an exercise in politics, or some combination of these factors, specific to place and moment ?  How has change over time shaped discrete Indigenous identities and political formations?  What is the future of the Indigenous in our globalizing world?

This course explores these questions and aims to provide a fully-three dimensional global view of the history and contemporary political dilemmas and opportunities facing Indigenous peoples today.  Reading and discussion intensive, students will work across the semester toward a concluding public forum in which you present a case study in your area of specialization.

Taught by Dr. James F. Brooks on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:15-3:45.
