However, it is the only Latin American country that has yet to adopt a legal framework recognizing Indigenous people's collective rights. There are six main groups of Surinamese Maroon people in Suriname. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights consistently rules to protect the territorial boundaries of these people, but the country continues to mine for gold and take down trees.
