Suriname is Selling its Gold and Timber, at the Cost of Tribal Land Rights

Suriname is a country in South America, known for its lush jungle. However, it is the only Latin American country that has yet to adopt a legal framework recognizing Indigenous people's collective rights. 

There are six main groups of Surinamese Maroon people in Suriname. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights consistently rules to protect the territorial boundaries of these people, but the country continues to mine for gold and take down trees. These harmful activities are damaging the Amazon rainforest and making the traditional lifestyle of the Indigenous people there impossible.
