The prominent statue of Christopher Columbus on the Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City will be replaced by a new statue of an indigenous woman, "Tlali." Mexico City's mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced the new memorial to indigenous Mexico on Sunday, September 5, International Day of the Indigenous Woman. This year is also the 700th anniversary of the founding of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital that was razed by Cortes in 1521. Mexico City is built on the ruins of the Aztec city. The Columbus statue was removed last year, supposedly for restoration after a series of vandalizations during indigenous-led protests. Read more at Indian Country Today.
