Image: On November 9th, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Brackeen v. Haaland on the constitutionality of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) — a 45-year-old law that was put into place to provide procedural safeguards and address the systematic removal of Native children from their families, communities, and cultures. ICWA has broad support from 497 Tribal Nations, 62 Native organizations, 23 states and DC, 87 congressional representatives, 27 child welfare and adoption organizations, and many others. Yet, despite such wide-ranging support, there is still the possibility of this 45-year old law being overturned, which would have devastating impacts on Native families, cultures, and tribal sovereignty.
